Even the sweetest dog can run a sheep to death by accident. The pond Is beautiful, spring fed and has lots of fish. It is also 20 feet deep. So swimming is not recommended. Parking area is marked with a green sign just past our driveway. We provide a large cart for the short walk through the woods to your secluded campsite. As always while out of doors, be careful. Other Things to Note: Since we are a sheep farm and dogs are potentially harmful to sheep, we cannot allow dogs at our campsite. We are a smoke free camp. Please do not smoke in or near the tent. We do provide candles for the picnic table, but please do not use in the tent as this is a fire hazard. And please keep the fire pit well away from the tent to prevent spark damage. Best not to move it from where we placed it. We provide a box of old fashioned games for your enjoyment, such as cards, chess, playing cards, puzzles for the kids, and Jenga, etc. But please return all to the box organized just as you found them so the next campers can enjoy them. Don't cut down or damage trees/timber. At end of stay, remove ashes from fire pit with shovel provided, place in ashcan and place cover over it to prevent fires. Please pick up all trash and deposit into trash can provided before departing. Make sure all supplies are put back as you found them. Interaction with Guests: Upon check out, you should leave-no-trace of your stay and be sure your campsite is returned to its natural glory! While Tentrr does not charge a cleaning fee, we do expect campsites to be left how they were found. After you check out, take everything you brought in and be sure to leave your trash at the designated location on the property. The 1/2 mi. drive often provides excellent wildlife viewing and may lead you a million miles from Monday. When you reach the home, parking is no problem (plenty of space). As you enter, the custom cedar is the most noticeable feature. The living area to the right has comfortable seating and a HD flat screen TV. The dining area is open to both the kitchen and living areas. The table seats 8 or 10 good friends with an additional 3 counter seats. The fully equipped kitchen has lots of counter space, coffee and spices for home cooked meals. The master bedroom has a 32 inch TV and a king bed, . Numerous antique and flea markets dot the area and an auction or estate sale occurs almost every weekend. Lynchburg is about 40 miles to the West and Richmond is about 70 miles to the East. There is a large Amish population in the area and churches of most denominations are close by. The biggest of them being the Thomas Road Baptist in Lynchburg.. Nature: Deer and turkeys are plentiful and often seen from the decks or on the driveway. Rabbits and squirrels are also in the area. Birds from the occasional eagle or hawk to sparrows can be seen. Much more rare are bear and fox sightings. The home is quiet inside and outside except for the sounds of nature. The night sky is a treat for city dwellers. No man made lights can be seen from the rear deck and our own spiral galaxy, the Milky Way, is often visible as a faint band of light across the sky. The 34 Mile High Bridge Trail is open to horses, walkers and non motorized bikes. It follows the old Norfolk & Western rail route through Farmville and over the Appomattox River as part of the rails to trails program. The trail's Western end is in Pamplin VA about 3 miles from the house. An easy horse ride on marked roads. Relaxation: The comfortable beds are nice but the jetted tubs and the outdoor hot tub can help even the most stressed traveler. Even in the depths of winter it is worth a short sprint across the rear deck to experience the bubbles and water of the 98-104 degree jets.(easily adjusted to your liking) A game of pool,foosball, cornhole, a video game, or a movie ( DVD player available) on the big screen is also available' If quiet is your preference this is the spot for you. The nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away. Besides the crickets, about all you can hear is the occasional faint rooster or cow.. The bedrooms are upstairs and include a full bed in each room with linens. The stairs are steep (with railings) and rustic. The full bath is downstairs. It has a claw foot tub/shower. Gas heat, air-conditioning, electric heaters, and fans are also available. There is no TV. Verizon offers the best cell service. The cottage has tons of rustic charm, with a queen bed in the upstairs loft and a brand new bathroom. There is a kitchen with sink, stove, oven, and microwave. NO WiFi: You truly disconnect from the pressures of constant communication and instead get to reconnect with the beauty of nature around you There are animals in the immediate surroundings…field mice, groundhogs, deer, mountain lions, coyotes, and even the occasional bear….but most of all, there are bugs. Lady bugs, ants, spiders, bees, etc. Especially of note is the attractiveness of our house to the regionally over-populated stink bug. We have a contract with a pest control service to treat the house for pests with the intention of limiting our human discomfort with our small neighbors, but it is the country. Especially in the summer, ants find their way inside. To reduce their presence, please keep food off of the counters and pick up crumbs from the floor. DURING YOUR STAY--We do NOT have trash service so far in the country. Please be mindful of the amount of trash that you are creating. You are responsible for taking the trash/recycling to the collection center on Route 56 in Shipman (about 15 minutes away). They are open 6 days a week, 7 am until 7 pm. They are closed on Mondays. They are also closed January 1, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Garbage left unsecured will be scavenged by animals. This is extremely unpleasant to remedy. Please lock the lids on the trash cans and do not allow trash to become unmanageable. If trash removal requires time-consuming and/or messy clean up, you will be charged an additional cleaning fee. There is a charcoal grill located in a covered area for your use. You should plan to bring your own charcoal. Grill tools are in a drawer in the kitchen between the two dishwashers. Please clean around the grill area after every use to reduce animals being attracted to the area. Upon arrival, if you would like to change the temperature on the thermostat, it is located in the foyer to the right of the living room doors. In summer: the upstairs window units will not be on and it will be hot. Turn on as needed to cool the upstairs bedrooms. There are some fans in assorted bedroom closets. Feel free to use these if you wish, just return them to where you found them upon departure. This is our family retreat. There are several cabinets/closets that are marked as owner’s closets. Please respect our privacy as we respect yours as our guests. If you find that you need to use spices and other dry food items in the cabinets, please just leave a cash donation for our replacement. OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT LIVING ROOM TV: Turn on, then use “Direct TV” remote CIRCUIT BREAKER BOX: If for any reason you have a power surge, the circuit breaker box is located in the mud room to the right of the coat closet (behind the door). GARBAGE DISPOSAL: Use for small crumbs of food only; otherwise it may jam the septic system. The switch is located inside the sink cabinet (underneath) to the left. POWDER ROOM SINK: The hot water faucet doesn’t work, and the cold faucet is finicky. Eclectic homes come with quirks! MASTER BATH TOILET: Requires holding the handle down while it flushes. SHOWER STEAM UNIT (downstairs master bathroom): Close shower door. Initiate steam in shower by turning the timer switch located to the left of the shower door. Turn clockwise until it stops, then back up to length of time for intended use. It takes about 10 minutes to begin to heat up for first use. Turn timer off (if still running) when you are finished. Leave shower door open after steam has dispersed in order to prevent mold. HOT TUB: The control pad is located on the side closest to the front railing. The temperature should be at 99. Raise temperature if desired before use by using the up arrows on the digital pad. If the control panel is set to "economy", you must change it to "standard" to get the water temperature to increase. For use, remove cover carefully by folding in half first, then moving to the side. To start the jets, push the jet icon on the digital pad, and the air icon for air bubbles. Immediately after use lower the temperature to 99 and replace cover by moving folded, then unfold to close. Tub should remain covered when not actively in use. GAS FIREPLACES: The dining room gas fireplace is not working at this time. [Turn on dining room fireplace by turning the knob that is on the right hand side of the unit. Do NOT use key. Key is for emergency shut off only. Turn on master bedroom fireplace by increasing the thermostat located to the left of the bedroom door. Again, do NOT use key unless there is an emergency.] The gas log stove in the master bedroom is controlled by a thermostat on the wall just inside the door to the right. Please turn units off (temperature down) before departure. DEPARTURE: ***Before you leave, please take the sheets off any beds used and leave them on the floor in the room.*** Used, wet towels should be draped over tubs or on hooks to prevent mold. Please return all items to their original location. Dishes should be loaded into dishwashers and cleaning cycles begun. Please make sure to close all windows, turn off air units upstairs (if applicable), and set the thermostat to 80 in warm months or 60 is colder months. Empty trash cans in bathrooms and bedrooms. You may leave one or two bags of trash inside the house, there should not be more than will fit in the cans. Our housekeeper is not equipped to manage excessive trash removal. If you must leave trash in outside cans even overnight, make sure the lids are on tight, secured with a large rock if necessary (see above warning of scavenging animals). If trash removal beyond the two bags is required, you will be charged at least a $75 fee. Lock the exterior doors before replacing the key. POOL INFORMATION (Memorial Day-Labor Day, typically) Necessary disclaimer: swim at your own risk. There is no lifeguard on duty. The pool is lined with a vinyl liner. It feels nice and soft on the feet, and is therefore sensitive to puncture. Please avoid any sharp items anywhere near the pool. Also, please make sure all gates are closed before you return to the house for the evening. A deer in the pool would be catastrophic to the liner. If you have brought pets with you, please ensure that they do not get into the pool for this same reason. All pool seating cushions (gray and yellow scheme) for the wrought iron furniture should be neatly stacked on the porch of the cottage when you arrive. Please return those items to the porch before any stormy weather and before you leave. Also, please leave the rattan loveseat and chair on the porch to protect them from the elements. The cushions (bright color stripes and floral) on those pieces were custom made and are not truly "weather proof". The umbrellas should remain closed and tied unless in use. An unexpected wind will break an umbrella very quickly. There is a maintenance company that services the pool every two weeks. I do not know the exact schedule, but hopefully they won t disturb you.

In the master bedroom the comfy king size bed has a down alternative comforter and duvet cover. This room also has a huge walk in closet for longer stays and plenty of room to hang clothing. A corner desk provides the master bedroom with a space for a few work emails, if you decide to bring your Roku TV that is linked to the wifi to stream movies to wind down your day. A little bit of history: The original deed of Avon Hill was granted by the King of England and has changed familial ownership only three times since the mid-1700s. At one time, the Avon Hill land totaled 1300 acres. Today 105 acres remain. The original house at Avon Hill burned in the early 1800s. The current homes date from the mid 1800s with many improvements. After ground-up restorations of all of our buildings, and continuous additions and upgrades, the Avon Hill Lodge compound is ready for your visit. Perhaps the most lasting and beautiful impression left upon Avon Hill Lodge visitors are the English and American boxwood gardens. In 1932, the property owners loaded 22 flatcar trains with boxwoods which today are part of the landscaping of the Governor’s Mansion in Williamsburg, Virginia.
